Kieran Tierney is expected to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury in what is a huge blow to Arsenal’s top-four ambitions.

The Scotland international felt discomfort in his left knee after training last week and subsequently missed the 3-0 defeat at Crystal Palace on Monday.

“Kieran’s rehabilitation programme will start immediately after his surgery, at which stage a clearer understanding will be established on his recovery timescale,” Arsenal said on Tuesday.

“However, it is likely that Kieran will now miss the remainder of this season.

“Everyone at the club will now be supporting and working hard with Kieran to get him back on the pitch as soon as possible.”

The Ghanaian missed matches against Watford and Liverpool in November due to a groin injury. He is being assessed ahead of this weekend’s clash with Brighton.

Using Xhaka as a temporary full-back arguably cost Arsenal in the Europa League last year and the lack of cover in the position could come back to bite them again with the race for the Champions
