Melbourne Victory 1-4 Manchester United result: Recap Ten Hag’s second game in charge

Ten Hag’s second game ends in victory with Manchester United winning 4-1.

They went 1-0 down but bounced back thanks to goals by McTominay, Martial, Rashford and a Lupancu own goal.

Ten Hag wouldn’t have been happy with how his side conceded as Lindelof and Maguire were slow and in the wrong positions but there was also a lot of positives.

United have a fourth. Chong beats his man on the right-hand side and then crosses towards the back post. It looks to be heading to Van de Beek but Melbourne Victory’s Lupancu diverts the ball into his own net.

Nani is on the pitch. He receives a great reception from all corners of the ground.

Here’s my colleague’s take on Rashford’s goal.

Nani is set to be given a cameo appearance against his former side. He receives an ovation as he prepares to come on for his debut.

Rashford has another effort at goal but his header is directed straight at the goalkeeper. Malacia plays in a neat cross but Rashford’s header goes straight at the opposition keeper.

United have struggled with pacy counter attacks today. They definitely need pace in their back line which was shown in the first half when Maguire and Lindelof struggled when Melbourne Victory scored their first goal. I wonder who will start at centre-back for United’s first Premier League match against Brighton…

Manchester United make it 3-1. Bailly once again dribbles out from the back and then plays a neat through pass to Rashford. The United captain then touches the ball and beats the keeper with a cool finish.

There are 20 minutes to go out in Melbourne. United are enjoying a lot of the possession now. Melbourne Victory haven’t made many changes so they look very tired. You feel another goal is coming. And we are still awaiting the arrival of Nani…

Iqbal and Savage have been very good so far. They are both only 19 but they look head and shoulders above some of the other players on this pitch. Ten Hag will be impressed.

Amad is playing as a false No 9 with Chong on the right and Rashford wide on the left.

He’s shown some neat touches inside the area. Van de Beek is also playing quite high up, where Ten Hag says he is best deployed.

Iqbal is definitely not out of his depth in this Manchester United team. He beats his man by pirouetting and then plays the ball into the penalty area. Melbourne Victory do well to clear the ball out of danger but that was fantastic play by Iqbal.

Rashford is having some joy on the left-hand side. He definitely looks like he has an extra spring in his step.

Telles continues to be given minutes as the left centre-back. I wonder if he could have a future at Old Trafford by being a back-up left centre-back. It seems Shaw and Malacia will battle it out for the left-back slot so Telles may have to change his game in order to say at the club.

Rashford wears the captain’s armband in this second half following Maguire’s substitution.

Plenty of changes for United with Ten Hag choosing to rotate all 10 of his outfield players. It’s another good chance to see how Iqbal and Savage fare in the first team.
